While there are many factors that can influence our mood and mental health, there has been much emerging research that our diets can play a role as well. Eating different foods won't make our mental health challenges go away, but they can certainly help ease some of the symptoms that we may experience. Here are a list of foods that can help ease depressive symptoms:
Probiotics
Prebiotics
Brown rice, quinoa, steel-cut oats, & chia seeds
Honey, orange juice, & whole grain food
Healthy fats: olive oil, nuts, avocado
Vitamins B9, B12, B1, B6, A, & C
Iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, & selenium
Saffron & turmeric
Oregano, lavender, passionflower, & chamomile
As always, be sure to consult with your physician or a registered dietician before making any changes to your diet. For anyone that is interested in learning more about how food can impact our mood, I highly recommend giving "This is Your Brain on Food," by Uma Naidoo, M.D. a read!
