While there are many factors that can influence our mood and mental health, there has been much emerging research that our diets can play a role as well. Eating different foods won't make our mental health challenges go away, but they can certainly help ease some of the symptoms that we may experience. Here are a list of foods that can help ease anxiety:
Vitamin B rich foods: ex. almonds & avocado
Omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish)
Zinc rich foods: ex. oysters, egg yolk, cashews
Leafy greens
Asparagus
Dark chocolate
Fermented foods: ex. kimchi, yogurt, kombucha, pickles, etc.
Turmeric
Citrus fruits
Green tea
Berries
Fortified nut, rice, & soy milks
As always, be sure to consult with your physician or a registered dietician before making any changes to your diet. For anyone that is interested in learning more about how food can impact our mood, I highly recommend giving "This is Your Brain on Food," by Uma Naidoo, M.D. a read!
