Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries. They are where we lay our heads to rest at night, hold space for our emotions, re-charge, and find relaxation. Our bedrooms can serve as our escape. The design of our bedroom can also have a direct influence on our mood. With all of the challenges and unknowns that we face in our day to day lives, who wouldn't want a bedroom that helps to calm anxiety and soothe our nervous system?
For today's blog, I sit down with someone who is a big role model and inspiration of mine, my mother. Maria Nicholson is the President and C.E.O. of Project Build Construction & Interiors, based out of Laguna Hills, CA. Project Build Construction & Interiors is a design and build firm specializing in home remodels, renovations, and aging-in-place. Maria and I explore together different design tips as well as products that you can utilize to design a bedroom that can exude a calm mood.
Paint Colors
Different colors can truly exude a relaxing ambiance. Paint colors that are sand and beige can bring a sense of calm that you would find while laying out at the beach. For a sandy tone, Maria loves Dunn-Edwards in White Sand DEW336. "It truly gives a calming feel," she says. Blue and violet tones are associated with stress relief while also reminding you of the ocean or the sky. For blue tones she recommends Sherwin Williams in Atmospheric SW 605 and Windy Blue SW6240. She also advises to check out Dunn-Edwards in Soft Lilac DE9574. For a shaded feel that is reminiscent of nature's greenery, she suggests Benjamin Moore in Silver Sage 506.
Furniture
For bedroom furniture, Maria recommends using pieces with natural surfaces, particularly wood. Pieces made of wood can help to bring more of a natural feel to your design. Here are a couple pieces to check out:

BRENNAN BED, West Elm
Decor
The decor that you use in your bedroom design can truly accentuate the mood of the room. Maria recommends using accent pillows that compliment the tones of your walls, placing a fresh bundle of eucalyptus or lavender in a clay vase, a white weighted blanket for a clean and grounded feel, and a diffuser for your favorite essential oils. Here are a few items to check out:

Plants
Adding plants to your bedroom's design can truly give a "zen" type of feel. Plants are not only calming but can also improve the air quality in your room. For bedroom plants, Maria recommends snake plants, jasmine, English ivy, ficus elastic, and peace lillies.

Lighting
To truly encompass a calm and grounded nervous system, Maria suggests to replace bright and harsh lighting for warmer and softer lights.
